Dominican Republic: Juan Pablo Duarte

Recently, I spent some time studying the life of Juan Pablo Duarte of the Dominican Republic. He was born in Santo Domingo in January 1813, where he was raised and educated until he went to Europe in 1828 (at the age of 15), to finish his education. In 1833, he returned to the Dominican Republic a changed man. Having seen the light of the Ilustracion and the liberal freedoms enjoyed by Europeans, he felt a deep sense of duty to free his own countrymen from Haitian (and Spanish) dominance.

La Trinitaria
On July 16, 1838, during the festival of La Senora del Carmen, he met with eight other men and formed La Trinitaria–a secret society whose sole purpose was to bring about the independence of the Dominicans and form a free republic. In reading historical accounts of this night, it is amazing to me how one person can inspire and ignite such belief and dedication-to-purpose in others. Duarte “spoke as if from heaven” and each man took the oath to give all he had, even his life, to the cause–sealing the oath with “blood from [his] vein”.

Another thing that I find fascinating about this night is the clear and precise vision that Duarte had of the future flag of the Republica Dominicana. He described the flag as blue and red (opposing colors AND the colors of the Haitian flag) with a white cross in the middle which represented peace and redemption.

Revolutionary Minds
The idea of people who come up with “new” ideas that go against the grain, is a fascinating one for me. The American Revolution is inspiring on many levels, but Latin America and it’s revolutionaries like Juan Pablo Duarte, Simon Bolivar, and Jose San Martin offer views into other revolutionary minds. And it’s not only the men that are “revered” that I find fascinating, but others, especially Che Guevara, whose psyche interests me.

In the end, something that I recognize in all the great revolutionary minds is intelligence (or enlightenment), an intense inner-drive, and an almost-grand-scale self-bravado. Interesting.

New World Architecture

From the 16th to the 18th centuries, two types of architectural design dominated the New World (Latinoamerica): Renaissance and Baroque.

Renaissance
This type of architecture was sensual and exhibited elements of harmony and equilibrium. It was also very symmetric and proportional which translated into a type of peaceful serenity.

Baroque
The Baroque architecture in the New World was extravagant, ornamental, and full of contrasts and oppositions. This was a period in time when there was a definite tension exhibited between worldly things and religious things.

Personally, I prefer the more serene Renaissance style. However, there is definitely something to be appreciated in the gaudy Baroque, as well.

Latin Culture: Backyard Dancing

I recently came across this blog post on "Beach Bum in the Yucatan". The story and especially the pictures spoke to my heart. I love backyard dancing!

It reminds me of my time spent living in Argentina and the fun, impromptu dancing we shared with locals whom we met along the way.

I'm telling you, we Americans are cold and snooty when it comes to backyard dancing. I've NEVER witnessed a backyard dance in the U.S. Why is that? Oh, and I definitely love to dance (American Bandstand in the 80's! There has to be video of me out there somewhere!).

And I guarantee you that somewhere, in some Latin backyard, there is some dancing going on right this very minute!

Vacation Photos: Strike a Pose!

I used to take the typical vacation photos: stand in front of something, smile for the camera, snap and go. Luckily, I've matured into an all-out "Work-it, Baby!" type of vacation photo-taker.

Here's an example:

A. This photo was taken several years ago...typical, right? Right.

B. Now THIS photo...see the difference?

Sure, sometimes you might feel like a fool...but who cares? You'll most likely never see any of those people again, and you'll definitely have a photo or two that you will absolutely love!

My suggestions:

1. Use props (scarf, raft, sunglasses, whatever)

2. Take a LOT of pictures (gives you room to throw out ones that you absolutely don't want to ever see the light of day!)

3. Work-it, Baby!

Go ahead and do it! Take advantage of that gorgeous beach or awesome pool to pretend you are The Next Top Model and capture some fabulous vacation memories!

Immigration: The University Student Perspective

As a more "mature" university student, I sometimes wish I could record class moments for the rest of the world to experience. For example, in my Advanced Spanish Practice & Composition class last week we were assigned the topic of U.S. Immigration: What are the problems? And how can they be fixed? We then shared thoughts and ideas (in Spanish) with the class and debated their efficacy. Here are some of the ideas:

1. We (the U.S.) are a rich country, so just give them money and they will stop coming over here.

2. When they come over here (to the U.S.), they need to commit to following the U.S.A. futbol (soccer) team - that will help bring us all together.
3. Get rid of the Peso and the Dollar and come up with a shared currency for the U.S. & Mexico.4. Send U.S. political support to the Mexican government in the form of advisors, mentors, etc.

5. Wipe out, completely, the current Mexican government and replace it with politicians who are not corrupt.*Let me point out that at least 50% of the class is native-Mexican, another 25% is American-Mexican, and the other 25% is pure-bred gringo.

Costa Flamingo, Mexico

Costa Flamingo, Mexico is in the Mexican state of Yucatan, which lies to the north of Merida (north from Cancun), on the Gulf coast. Costa Flamingo is named for the thousands of flamingos that reside there, and is also known as the Emerald Coast and Riviera Flamingo.

Costa Flamingo's beaches are similar to other Gulf of Mexico beaches, except the sand is softer and whiter, and the water has more of the Caribbean turquoise color that is typical of beaches further south.

Esencia Resort - Tulum

I've found my heaven on earth... I've never been there (to the exact spot/resort/estate), but it's on my list of MUSTS. The "estate" is called Esencia and it is in Tulum, on the Mayan Riviera in Mexico. It is costly ($1,500 - $4,800 for two people for a 3 night - 7 night stay). Oh, wow. I'm in love! Any volunteers to pay my way?

"Back in the day, the Spanish arrived in the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan (present day Mexico City), and they noticed that the Aztecs’ dishes were mainly made with corns, chilies, tomatoes and beans, and sometimes herbs, fruits and nopales. They thought of introducing their very own diet of rice, pork, beef, garlic and onions to create a fusion of bursting flavors. It used to be that Mexico’s staple food was corn or maize but rice slowly gained popularity that it is now considered as a staple in the same rank as that of corn. A renowned food writer by the name Karen Hursh Graber once noted that in the early 16th century, there was a significant increase in the entry of rice products from Spain via the Veracruz port...."

"This fascinating story actually begins with the birth of Gonzalo Guerrero back in the early 1470’s at Palos, Andalusia, Spain.

Trained as a military combatant he fought to drive the last of the Moors out of the Iberian Peninsula by 1492 ending eight centuries of Islamic occupation. Then he took up his next position of soldier/sailor on Columbus’s first ocean crossing expedition aboard the small open carvel vessel, Niña.

This soldier of fortune’s story did not reappear in the annals of history again until 1511. Gonzalo set sail in good weather from the Gulf of Darien on the Colombian coast of South America north bound with looted treasure and slaves.

What happened next is one of the worst nightmare stories that could happen to anyone.
Forty year old Gonzalo was plummeted into the sea aboard a makeshift raft with no food or water, one of eighteen men and two women to survive the wrath of a hurricane that dismasted his ship and sunk it.

Only eight lived to make landfall, having to resort to cannibalism in order to survive.

Salvation did not happen. The group of eight survivors were apprehended and enslaved by their Mayan Cocom captors on the Yucatán coast.

Four of these survivors were sacrificed and eaten immediately. The others were caged and fattened for a future festival of flesh feasting. The fattening gave the remaining four the strength to escape to the Tutul Xiues tribe of Mayas who were enemies of the Cocom’s.

(An interesting fact of logistic history; in the recorded accounts of the first encounters of these Europeans arrival in Yucatán it was noted that hammocks were in use by the natives.)

Tutul Xiues made slaves of these surviving Spaniards. Due to extreme hard work and exhaustion only Gonzalo Guerrero and Geronimo de Aguilar survived.

Geronimo de Aguilar kept his religion and cultural ways but Gonzalo Guerrero took up the Mayan ways and became a military advisor and trainer teaching the Maya the combat tactics of the Spanish. It has been speculated that this Spanish combat training gave the Mayan people of the eastern jungle part of the Yucatán peninsula the ability to drive out the conquistadors. The Mayan of the Quintana Roo region, (eastern jungle) have never been completely subdued and it wasn’t until Méxican federal forces put down the protracted Caste War in the early 1900’s that this area became a territorial part of México."

It has been snowing in Texas. Yep. It's weird. It's cold. I do not do snow. As the soft, white snowflakes were falling gently outside my window, I was inside with my feather blanket and my laptop--dreaming beaches. I went through old photos, and have found a few gems that I will add to this post. Good times.

I discovered a fellow Twitterer (@StayAdventurous) and blogger (http://stayadventurous.wordpress.com/) today. Reading his blog has brought back many memories of my travels around the world: the people; the sunsets; the beaches; the plane rides. All of the adventures. As I sit here with my wool socks and hooded sweatshirt, he sits on a beach in Cabo San Lucas, Twittering pictures that make my green blood boil. StayAdventurous - don't you need an assistant?

Mexican Rice

The Mexican Rice, also known as the Spanish Rice is a side dish that is basically made white rice, tomatoes, garlic, onions, parsley, cilantro and other ingredients that you would wish to add. The dish is simply called arroz which means rice in Spanish. And it is usually served as a side dish alongside other Mexican cuisine.

And so to be able to enjoy this delicious side dish I’m talking about, here is an easy and step by step procedure you can use to try out and cook it yourself. Enjoy!

Ingredients

* 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
* 1 cup uncooked long-grain rice
* 1 teaspoon garlic salt
* 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
* 1/4 cup chopped onion
* 1/2 cup tomato sauce
* 2 cups chicken broth

Directions

1. Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat and add rice. Cook, stirring constantly, until puffed and golden. While rice is cooking, sprinkle with salt and cumin.

Uxmal can be visited in a single day trip. It’s only Located 200 miles from Cancún. It has an impressive Pyramid of the Magician, surrounded by greens, represents one of the high points of Mayan Puuc architecture. Built during the Late Classical period of the 7th through 9th centuries, Uxmal is may be the most elegant of all ancient Mayan sites.

Uxmal is aligned to the positions of the sun. At 125 feet high, the Magician is worth climbing. It boasts one of the steepest staircases in Mesoamerica. During your climb, take a well-deserved stop past the half-way point and check out a small vaulted room with two columns. This structure has already been rebuilt five times.

Are you afraid of heights? You may explore many of the other structures in Uxmal, the Nunnery Quadrangle, which is considered by many to be one of the site’s finest structures. The magnificent House of the Governor faces east, possibly to allow the observation of the planet Venus. The Quadrangle of the Birds is comprised of a number of chambers and was named for its bird decorations.

"Cobá is a quiet, serene place, with a few tourists, it’s popular for serious bird watching. You can rent a bicycle or a guide who will also have transportation. You may walk but it’s quite far. Getting lost here is very possible, as sites and paths are not always clearly marked. If you decide to go on your own, it’s safe, simply resist the temptation to wander off into the jungle. Be sure to bring mosquito repellent, sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots, and plenty of water to drink. As Cobá is located inland from the ocean, it’s hotter and more humid, so visit as early in the day as you can.

Cobá is divided in several areas called groups, including the Cobá Group, which is home to the 79-foot temple. It would be nice to get here early enough to have the temple all to yourself. This group also includes a restored ball court, where the Maya played a sacred ball game. The Chumuc Mul Group is only partially excavated. Nochob Mul Group is fully excavated and includes the tallest pyramid in Cobá. After climbing 120 steps, you will enjoy the well-preserved temple on top and the breathtaking views."

Akumal
Akumal features some of the most stunning beaches on Earth. Offshore reefs protect the silky white sand and filter warm water currents through the coastal caves and subterranean rivers.

In the Maya language, Akumal means "place of the turtles." This natural refuge is still a popular place for sea turtles to lay their eggs; see them between the months of May and November on Half Moon Bay beach.

The protected reef is a favorite snorkeling and dive site. The Akumal Dive Shop has all the gear you'll need and is easily accessible from the main road entering Akumal.

While enjoying Akumal's natural beauty, consider staying at the eco-friendly Vista del Mar. Their green policies are kicked up a notch during the turtles' nesting season. Lights are removed from all the balconies and the security guards are all environmentally certified to assist turtles nesting on Vista del Mar's stretch of beach.

Tulum
Tulum is the only archaeological site located along the Caribbean shores in the Mayan Riviera. Over 60 structures can be viewed within the massive walls that protect the ancient pre-Columbian Mayan city from the sea. The principal structures of the ruins include the city square, the Temple of the Descending God and Temple of the God of the Wind. Within the city square is the Castillo, sometimes referred to as the lighthouse, standing alone on the city's bluff offering stunning views and a sense of historical awe.

There is a small beach beside the Temple of the Descending God where you can swim and sunbathe beneath this ancient city; the same beach where Mayan trade ships would have docked at Tulum centuries ago.

During your stay here, make sure to take the 45-minute night tour of the Tulum's archaeological sites. You'll be guided along lighted paths through the ancient city where the temples and monuments are lit in an array of colors. Enhance your experience by opting for the audio component of the tour.

*$1 Bills! (30-50) Great for tipping and small transactions (so you don’t get change in Pesos.) If you are from the U.S. - DO NOT exchange money! They take U.S. Dollars everywhere in Mexico.
*Air Fresheners (Febreeze, Candle, or Plug-In for musty-smelling rooms.)
*Aloe Gel
*Bandana To secure hair; cover frizzy hair or a bald head; cool/wipe off.
*Beach Bag/Backpack (A separate bag than your travel/carry-on bag as this one will get sandy, smelly, dirty. Should be washable (for when you get home).)
*Binoculars (For bird watching to people watching.)
*Bug Spray (Also consider some sort of “Afterbite”/anti-itch cream/spray.)
*Camera
*Clothes Pins (Hang laundry; close curtains.)
*Coin Purse Small; lightweight. (So you can leave your wallet in the safe and just take what you need.)

Fifty years ago, a Mexican aquatic archeologist named Pablo Bush Romero (1905-1998), "rediscovered" Akumal as he was looking for the wreckage of the Spanish merchant frigate, Nuestra Senora de Matanceros (1741). He loved Akumal so much that he bought the property from a local land-owner and established Akumal as a diver's enclave.

I get asked all the time, "What must I absolutely see/do while in the Mayan Riviera?" Here's my list (in order of importance).

Must See/Do
1. Tulum Ruins (Do NOT miss out on going down the stairs to the beach and PLAYING IN THE WATER for a while! The sand is soft and the waves are fun!)
2. Playa del Carmen 5th Avenue (Go at night – the temperature is better and it is a lot of fun!)
3. Akumal Main Bay (Snorkel with turtles!!!)
4. Coba Ruins (Rent the bicycles and ride around the ruins! And climb the pyramid!!)
5. Cozumel (Take the ferry from PDC…snorkel, eat, etc.)

Hacienda Paradise Boutique Hotel

Our night at Hacienda Paradise in Playa del Carmen was an interesting one. The boutique hotel is on a fairly busy side-street in north Playa--and with all the one-way streets, it took us a bit to find it.
Pros: Clean; cool room furniture; free breakfast; pool (too cold to use on this trip); great bathroom & shower; found a street parking spot right infront of the hotel; hard beds/mattresses--but it didn't bother me at all;

Cons: Located on a busy side-street and half of the room doors are on this street, out in the open; a glass pane next to our "window" A/C was broken, so that let the noise in even further; no hot water for my 5:00 AM shower--I went back to bed and called at 7:00 and they fixed it; had to pay $2.50 for yogurt at breakfast--but it was worth it;

A recent article entitled "Extreme Makeover" by Mary Miller in Archeology, discusses interesting facts about what the Mayan people believed to be physically beautiful.
The article mentions binding the head to produce a flattened forehead and elongated skull to drilling holes in their teeth and filling them with jade.

La Cueva del Chango

La Cueva del Chango means "Monkey's Cave" in English. I have heard a lot about this restaurant/bar in Playa del Carmen, and this trip I am going to check it out!
It is an open-sided palapa made of woods and natural materials such as stone. Water and greenery contribute to the ambiance of a "jungle" feel.
As far as the food goes--lots of fresh fruit (salads, juices, etc.), homemade rye bread, and freshly made salsas! (Yum!) Traditional Mexican food with a twang (ie: shrimp breaded with Xcatic chili and cinnamon) is said to make for a new experience.

Hotel Hacienda Paradise

On our upcoming trip, we will be staying one night at the boutique hotel "Hacienda Paradise" in Playa del Carmen. This is somewhere I have never stayed before--I'm looking forward to previewing it.
Besides the regular selling points of cleanliness, decor, location, etc., my considerations in choosing Hacienda Paradise were:

La Buena Vida is a restaurant in Akumal on Half Moon Bay. With sand floors, swing seats at the bar, and the ocean-front view, you almost don't care what the food tastes like. But, turns out it is good. This restaurant is definitely one of MRTM's MUST TRY while in the Mayan Riviera. View of the restaurant from the beach/bay. Middle of the picture with all of the palapas.

One reason I add binoculars to the Mexican Packing List is so that you can enjoy bird-watching! I'm not a "bird-watching" type of person, but I can honestly say that the most extraordinary birds I have ever seen have been in the Mayan Riviera!

Admittedly, the Southern-California in me got a little excited when I first saw this - Don't see it? Here, look closer -
So, the So-Cal girl in me says, "Bonfire ring!" Right?

(My next thought: "Do they have marshmallows in Mexico?")

Good thing I took a closer look before I gathered the wood...That's right - a turtle nest! Very cool.

The nests outside of our condo did not hatch while we were there, but I did have the awesome experience of seeing some baby turtles digging out of their nest on one of my morning walks. Luckily a nice Mexican man and woman were gathering them up and putting them in water until they could release them later in the day (so the birds wouldn't eat them for breakfast!).

Note: No, this is NOT turtle soup!

Palapa

A PALAPA is a thatched-roof umbrella (or open-sided structure) built to provide shade. These are very common in the Mayan Riviera. Even if you think you won't need one...you will. Grab it in the morning/while it's open/when it's free...because you will want it later in the day.
Sometimes there is netting covering the dried palm leaves to protect the roof of the palapa from wind-damage.

Some palapas have a built-in table around the center (like this one below)...
